I didn't know about the spring. Is it the same for an '83 as an '88?
Mine is an '83, probably pretty close. Make sure you have gear oil for the linkages.

Ok, got you. And you're saying you have a replacement unit? The tach is still fine.
You have them for the speedo or the trip meter? My only issue is the trip meter, the speedo itself is fine.
I messed around with it and a little wiggly action seems to have fixed it, at least for now.

It should keep you in good stead. ou might want to add a 3rd tire iron to your kit depending how good you are at changing flats.
I carry a backup hand pump to my 12 volt mini pump. This is an excellent product.
R65 kit
That would drive me nuts! I put a Brown's on mine as well but I don't remember having too hard a time getting the old one off, it wasn't OEM either.
I recommend OEM tool kits for airheads. I got a very nice new one of quality tools from Bob's BMW for my R65 LS and I'm sure they have ones for the R1...
