I will be repairing a slipping clutch on my 1984 R100RT. Anything else to look for while this thing is in pieces? Is the thicker wiring to the starter a good idea?

If you have the Transmission out, be prepared to go just a bit further to get at the rear main seal and oil pump O-ring. I'm not saying that you must do this, just be prepared. Do your reading before you start, and if you go all the way, be sure to block the crank.

Will definitely block the crank. That ranks right up there with the $2000 oil filter change. Previous owner replaced rear main seal at 90K just for grins as he had the transmission rebuilt. With 45K miles put on since then should the rear main seal be replaced if not leaking? As for seals and o rings, is genuine BMW the way to go?

Definitely block the crank, replace the oil pump o-ring and use BMW oil seals. BMW had huge issues in the 70's with crankshaft oil seals and finally developed one that would seal. It's not worth saving $10 to be forced to pull the gearbox a second time.

Additionally, if you want to run synthetic oils in your gearbox, some people believe (me included ) that synthetic oil will leak when the seal has been run a long time with mineral oils.

Owning an old Airhead is easy.
Keeping an old Airhead running great is the true test.

UPGRADING any portion of the wiring harness is a plus.

i found some great wire for little money @ my local auto-stereo install shop as scrap. the ends can be found @ any FLAPS.

crimp, solder and heat shrink all connections.
upgrading the ground wires, the main supply line RED to the headlight circuit board . cleaning ALL Electrical Connections while your looking at everything and I mean EVERY electrical connector, male female, on boards, component parts, wire ends, Make SURE all connections are Tight !

label wires so you know what's ... what it helps when you're on the road

adding solder to every ring connector helps to make a tight contact. Adding a star washer ALSO helps make a solid connection .

adding these everywhere helps to complete a solid clerical grid. using a plain old split ring lock washer is NOT as good.

adding multiple grounds helps:

battery to frame.
battery to engine.
engine front to engine rear.
any component to frame.
H/L to frame.
tail lamp to frame.

as with increasing the gage wire RED to the H/L circuit board so MUST you increase the return --------- ground wires

same goes for the red wire to the starter relay to the H/L from the starter motor BIG lug
