What's this port on my cylinder head?
I bought my 1980 R100T off e-Bay and went to change the oil for the first time.
While changing the filter I found one of the three the oil filter cover bolts stripped-out.
I'm going to install a helicoil in the hole and had to remove the exhaust header pipe on the right side.
When I did, I found a strange plugged-up port on the bottom of the head, under the exhaust port(see photo).
My questions:
* What is this port for?
* Is it the remnants of an old pollution control system?
* Is it needed?
* Being plugged-up and not connected to anything, is it effecting my performance?
Thanks for any info!
On a car they call it the Exhaust Gas Re-circulation port, or EGR. BMW may have another name. A small sample of the hot exhaust gas is shot back into the intake to reduce one of the gases that the EPA wants to limit.
The system entails a lot of plumbing and is generally credited with a loss of power and lower fuel mileage, so most owners have it removed. The hardest part of this action is 1) successfully blocking the exhaust port without incurring leaks, and 2) doing so in an aesthetic manner. Yours looks to be in good shape on both counts, so I advise you to let a sleeping dog lie.
Owning an old Airhead is easy.
Keeping an old Airhead running great is the true test.
Kinda what I thought.
Aesthetic-wise they do look rather nasty. I'll see if Ted Porter's Beemer Shop can clean them up when I get my heads rebuilt.
Thanks for the info!
