Hello all, I have something I am hoping someone might be able to shed some light on. The gen light and the neutral light on my 1982 R100RS seem to be acting the reverse of how they are designed. The neutral light is on at any time the bike is in gear, and off in neutral and the gen light is strongest at high rev and off when at a low idle. The charging system seems to work fine. I looked at the schematic and couldn't see anything off the bat made sense as the issue. Any help would be appreciated!

What is the last thing done to the bike? Is it possible the neutral switch is the wrong one? For the charge light get out the meter and find out what is happening. What is the voltage at the battery terminals with engine at 3000 rpm?

Just a SWAG and worth every penny you paid for it...

Crazy, weird, unrelated electrical issues like this usually turn out to be issues with the Return wiring. (What most novice mechanics incorrectly call "ground".) In your harness those are denoted by Brown wires. The only shared Return wiring between these two lamps is in the speedo/tach unit itself. And since most issues are traced to connectors, I highly suspect the Return contacts in the large connector on the rear of the speedo/tach unit itself.

An easy first move, which won't hurt anything and can only help....
• Disconnect the speedometer drive cable
• Loosen the 3 fasteners on the speedo/tach unit that face the rider
• Lift the speedo/tach straight up and off its mounting post
• Without stretching the wiring loom, rotate the speed/tach far enough to access the single screw in the connector
• Use a #1 Phillips bit to remove the single screw
• Pull the connector straight away
• Using a very slender dental tool or ice pick, VERY SLIGHTLY close up the C-shaped female socket contacts inside the harness-side of the connector
• Apply a dab of No-Ox-Id anti-corrosion electrical compound to each female contact
• Reinstall the connector
• CAREFULLY reinstall the single screw
• Slide the speedo/tach unit back onto the post
• Snug (don't tighten !) the 3 mounting screws
• Reconnect the speedo drive cable

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys. I hooked a DMM up to the battery and rode around a little bit, and the charging system seems to be working as you would expect. Wobbly, i will be sure to try why you have laid out. As far as the neutral night, I had the switch replaced when I did some transmission work and it did the same thing with both switches.
