Front brake caliper rebuild on 1983 r100rs
Is there a good video on the internet for rebuilding the front brake calipers on a 1983 r100rs?
There's really nothing to it. I've not worked on those exact calipers, but they all work alike. You won't need a full rebuild kit in every instance, usually only if it's leaking.
There will be several fasteners that hold the 2 halves together and an o-ring or 2 on that surface. Split the halves. You can blow out the pistons from either half with compressed air. You'll want to clean off all the old crusty brake fluid from the bores and the pistons. The old fluid will be coating all the surfaces like yellow varnish. A drill motor with wire brush is very helpful in removing that. If there is any rust on the piston-cylinder contact surfaces, then the piston must be replaced. Compressed air is (almost) required in order to keep all the parts clean. Plan for 60-90 minutes for each caliper and take your time.
Reassemble with brake assembly paste or new brake fluid. Follow the torque spec when assembling the 2 halves back together.
Remember DOT 3 and DOT 4 fluid will eat the paint off anything it's left on, so dowse the bike with a bucket of warm soapy water when everything is back together.
