Airhead Rewire
Howdy Airheads, So bumming around the country side for 5 years living on the bastard bike (naked '88 RS)I came to loath the instrument pod. The mounts break, glass breaks, the speedo bounces around with a mind of it's own, who cares about mileage and besides I Ride Slow and Stop Often. The bike is far from a garage queen and I'm not one to be concerned with OG pinstripes and I kinda have a soft spot for pitted aluminum and dirt under the nails.
I'm the fifth owner of the bike and the only one that put any miles on the scoot but all the PO's seemed to have their own fixes and a stock wiring diagram never made any sense, It was always a guessing game with a multimeter tracing wires. Not fun at the end of a dirt road in Echo Park or coasting down the hill from Sequoia NP with the motor off cause of a burnt diode hoping to make it to Porterville.
This fall I took it upon myself to just have the bare necessities in regards to the electrical system; lights, starter and charging. I started tearing out wires. First I removed the neutral switch and plugged it up. I then removed the oil pressure switch, clutch switch, BS fairing wiring, found a twist tie, and then I came to the pod. Time to go you SOB.
I'm sure everyone is aware of the charging light in the pod. The fix took a moment to process but to get power to D+ I rigged it up to a spare spade on the headlight relay and now I can ride the Driftless Area naked as a jaybird and I probably go a bit faster now. Regardless of my goofball story, I have recreated the wiring diagram which now makes sense. Check it out and ride naked!
Cheers Airheads, it's good to be back. Houston
