I'm trying to remove my front forks. My problem is, even with the triple tree tree pinch bolts removed, I can't pull the chrome upper tubes out of the triple-trees.
They're stuck. I got one side out by beating on it, but I pretty much destroyed it. Still have the other tube to remove.

I'm hoping there is a easier, gentler way to remove the other.

Since the stanchion tube fits so tightly into the triple tree and since motorcycles experience so much water, it is quite common for the tubes to be difficult to remove. However, a well regimented procedure will always prevail.

• Remove the handlebars or any other nearby obstruction
• Support the front of the engine with a screw jack
• Spray the stuck area with a good penetrant
• Unscrew the hex nut keeping the tube from traveling through the crown only 1/8 inch
• Strike the top tube nut with a large dead-blow hammer until the tube moves enough to remove the clearance
• Re-spray the penetrant
• Unscrew the nut another 1/8 inch and repeat

In some stubborn cases it may be necessary to remove the crown, replace the head post bearing nut and tube top nut. Do not strike the gauge pod !

Before replacing the tube, clean off any rust from the tube and polish the inside of the triple tree. Apply a waterproof grease.

Good luck.

Owning an old Airhead is easy.
Keeping an old Airhead running great is the true test.

On the triple tree insert a small screwdriver where the bolt was in the clamp edge to spread it a bit more. Place a 2x4 on tube before you whack it. If you check e-bay for another front end, lamont sanfurd has a complete one with a good starting price.
