1978 /7 Master Cylinder Rebuild
Any gotchas to look for when rebuilding the master brake cylinder? Have purchased the kit, read the rebuild instructions. Any suggestions for the grease that should be used other than that listed in the instructions?
All information is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Cheers,
Wolf
Scot is right. Most of these m/c I've experienced needed rebuilding because of a ring of built-up crud that keeps the piston from returning all the way to rest. It's important to remove the caked-on crud for both sealing and operation.
I take the m/c all the way off the bike so the bore can be fully visible during sanding, and then thoroughly wash the reservoir and cylinder interior in hot soapy water. Be sure to use a hair dryer to get all the water out before any fluid goes in.
Master cylinder rebuild time is also a good time to consider new "stainless steel" hoses. See the other posts on the topic of master cylinders and brake hoses.
Hope this helps.
