1976 R75/6 weeping "oily" fluid at exhaust seam
I've read this forum off and on for a few years and finally pulled the trigger on my 1st airhead. Love the bike and is generally in great condition. I have 3 rides in and am noticing a small puddle right under the foot peg which seems to be coming from the connection into the muffler. Is it common for moisture to build in the exhaust and eventually leak out or is it something more sinister? Oil level seems to be holding fine and no smoke or smell when riding.
It's my first week and would really like to get a few miles in before I need to breakout the toolbox. Thanks.
So you're seeing oily water ? Water is a natural by-product of burning fuel, but typically the exhaust is hot enough keep it in vapor form. So it should not be collecting in the muffler. How long were these "rides" ?
Are you sure it's not the battery overflow tube ?

My last two rides were short runs across town, 5-8 miles. Pretty sure it's not the overflow... appears to be very slowly dripping out of the stand side exhaust. Doesn't seem to happen when it's up on the center stand which led me to think the angle isn't allowing the fluid to sit in the same spot as when using the kick stand. Hope that makes sense.
Scott is right. You need to get out and just ride that thing. Get some maps out and find a small town or scenic attraction 100 miles away. Plot a course on some US highways or state roads to get there, and then a different way back. You'll burn through a tank or 2 of gas and have a blast. But the main thing is that the water will be gone by the time you get back.
I like to pack my tank bag with bottled water and snack bars and simply "go". That way if I don't find a great place to eat it's not a big deal. No need to worry about where you are until it's time to head home, and a smart phone with Google Maps can easily take care of that.

Got it. Did a 50 mile ride yesterday and will have my wife read all of the advice so I can disappear for a few hours on the 4th.
This may seem like a stupid question, but are you in Maine ??
