I will be heading out for Kingman, AZ on June 12th. to retrieve my son's remains. He has been cremated, as he was tossed in the ground for 19 months, that was necessary. He was murdered there on 6/16/15. There will be a memorial ride for him on the 2 year anniversary called the Sid Cranston Jr. memorial ride. Any mode of transportation is welcome. I am not sure of my exact date of return, but I anticipate being gone 2 weeks. I live near Niagara Falls, NY. I was considering trying to earn my Iron Butt patch, but it sounds like an awful lot of monkying around with gas receipts, etc. To date, the farthest I have ever ridden in a dat is from Charlotte, N.C. in 11.5 hrs. I will be riding a yellow R100RT. I have never owned a full face helmet, but am considering one for this ride, to cut down on the wind noise. I see Paul and Voni Glaves both wear that style, and I know my 1/2 helmet leaves a LOT to be desired in noise reduction, when running 5 or so over the posted speed limit most of the time! Hope to get a wave or two on the ride! Leaving early, heading for Oklahoma City, see how far I get the first day.

Sorry for your loss. So how did your ride go, or is it still to come? I'd highly recommend a full face helmet and ear plugs. Actually the documentation for the basic IronButt rides like SS1000 or BB1500 is pretty simple. At a gas stop, Simply write your mileage on the Dated Business Receipt(BDR). Take a picture of that DBR next to bike odometer and your good to go. Since it so simple I typically take several pics, and pics of my little Garmin eTrex20 trip meter. I then fold up the BDR and tuck it in to a little flip top mint can I recycled to better use, don't want to loose those DBRs. At the beginning and end just have a witness sign an IronButt form, they can be at home before you starting/ending gas receipt. And now days you can submit electronically, way quicker then sail mail.
The RT is a great bike to use for this.

• I highly recommend a full-face helmet plus ear plugs, or ear buds if you want to listen to music.

• Adding any type of edge strip along the top edge of a windscreen will reduce noise and head buffeting. You can use the fancy stuff for $14/ft or get a roll of the generic edge trim off Amazon for $14 for 13 ft !

• The modular helmets may look like the perfect answer, but they are often slightly noisier due to the presence of more joints. My brother swears that wearing one of those airplane neck pillows backwards, or one of those snow mobile throat protectors that connects to the bottom of a full-face cuts out all the noise. (Seems most of the noise is created 3" either side of the chin.) Either of these solutions can get hot in mid-summer, but sometimes the noise wears you down faster than the heat.

Owning an old Airhead is easy.
Keeping an old Airhead running great is the true test.
