Hi All-

I am back on the site after a number of years, good to be back. My reason, I am once again an owner of an airhead. This time it’s a fairly worn ‘81 R65 that was too good of a deal to pass up. Bike only has 38k on it, but appears to have lived a fairly difficult life. The entire bike will need work, and I am just starting the process of a needed parts inventory.

First item deals with the dash area. This is the housing in which the tax and speedo are placed, and also includes the side-by-side turn signal indicators. It’s a two piece item, too and bottom, connected with screws. The housing that came with the bike is cracked and scuffed, needs replacing.

I have not seen this housing on any other model of airhead. I have called at least a half-dozen parts dealers, no luck in finding a decent used one (I was told they are no longer produced).

Thus my first delimma. I would prefer to keep the bike stock, but am concerned about my ability to locate a near-perfect replacement. Any suggestions as where to inquire is appreciate. I have already tried the major dealer names, no luck. It seems that even the proper part number for this year and model is difficult to locate, and it seems it wasn’t used more than a year or two.

I realize that the R65 is a bit of a different airhead, but certainly I cannot be alone in this quest. So if a good clean part is non-existent. I would appreciate hearing from other members who have perhaps used other airhead model parts as replacements. The R65 appears to also be unique was it uses a bracket for the instruments and housing that also is used as the headlight bracket and mount for the front turn signal stalks. I am also in need of that part as well.
