LED Tail Lamp Insert
My new-to-me 1988 RS came with a manufactured LED insert that takes the place of the 2 bulbs and the chrome plastic reflector. It has an array of maybe 50 computer-grade discrete red LEDs mounted in a circuit board which is then mounted to a chrome steel bracket. The bracket is then held in place by the same 2 screws that secure the tail lamp lens.
It's a fairly slick setup, and gives more dispersed lighting across the entire tail lamp lens. I'd like to find some more of these if they're still made. Any idea who makes or carries these ? Anybody got a name ?
Thanks.

Keeping an old Airhead running great is the true test.
Well, a Google search turned up the answer for me....

Wally world sells LED replacement bulbs for turn signals and brake lights etc. They are even color coded to application IE. Turn Signal is yellow.. Brake Light red.. Or white for whichever.
The turn signals however seem to speed up the rate of flash so hopefully this doesn't draw shorter life on the diode.
Red lamp is 150 percent brighter then stock and turn signals are about 200 percent more visible.
Very high quality bulbs using the plate style led not the bulbous old skool.
I'm impressed at the price and wide range of applications available.
I have used these a few times on airheads, but only for the tail light. As you state, an impressive increase in light output for not much $.

WHY don't you post some pics so those who have no clue can understand ...... like me, unless you are speaking about the Rick Jones Moto-eletrik tail / brake lamp unit below.
i mod'd my turn signals and ADDED / WIRED with 6 LED x 2 ,
as red running lights and amber turn signals.
i have rick jones tail lamp LED set-up
and
i added a brake light bar
these are 2 Electropods inside the alum blinker housing. . . . . . red /white (shows amber thru lens)
systems working. full reflector set i made
this is Moto-elektrik unit
The walmart Lightbulbs look literally like the original lightbulb....in other words it is a DIRECT OEM replacement. no soldering, no wire splitting, cutting or modding.
the Walmart light has the same socket as the original light bulb...you can get these lights at not just Wallyworld but Checker Orielly and Napa parts stores..
the bulbs themselves are pretty reliable and really cheap in comparison to allot of the other light kits that have you splicing wires, not like any of us Airheads cant figure out that stuff. most of us are already familiar with all things BMW as far as fabricating or assembling non OEM stuff.
I have for you all some pictures as examples....keep in mind every light for every single socket is not shown...
