I am in the process of adding a sidecar to my 1979 R100RT. The rear brakes have always been only slightly better than dragging my feet. I have ignored this because my riding stile is to do most of my braking with the front brake and gear selection.
The sidecar has no brakes now and I am going to have the sidecar axle turned down to accommodate the snowflake wheel.
I have run sidecars with and without brakes and I prefer having all the brakes I can get.
Is there a master cylinder I can change to that will improve my rear brakes as well as a disk on the sidecar?
I have not decided yet what caliper I will use on the sidecar, will depend on what kind of used parts I can find.

I have the same bike, and you're correct about the poor rear braking. I can see why they went back to the drum on the single-sided. They are equally poor brakes, but at least it's a much simpler assembly to maintain.

Good luck on your quest.

Owning an old Airhead is easy.
Keeping an old Airhead running great is the true test.
