This gearbox routinely over-shifts (1 out of 25 shifts) and passes through 2nd into a neutral between 2nd and 3rd gears. If this were the English bikes I'm accustomed to working on I'd suspect weakened or collapsed gearbox springs due to age. A knowledgeable pal who's ridden and worked on BMWs for decades says no, its the external shift pedal being super loose on the spindle. (Previous owner added the optional heel-toe shift lever.)

The bike is new to me and I don't know much about the previous riding history except to say that it was probably all cruising because the bike came to me fitted with high, pull-back bars. Last owner is now 85yo and owned the bike for 18 years.

I'm shifting normally between 3000 and 4000 RPM. Fresh g/b oil change. Event happens warm or cold.

Suggestions ?

Owning an old Airhead is easy.
Keeping an old Airhead running great is the true test.
