Hi everyone,
I recently purchased a fully restored 1995 BMW R100GS (VIN: WB1048906S0048348). Originally registered in California, the bike was purchased from Utah. During the restoration, the frame was repainted, and the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Label was removed.

The California DMV has informed me that this label is required for registration. I reached out to BMW San Francisco, but they recommended registering the bike in another state instead.

Has anyone dealt with a similar situation or know how I can obtain or replace the Federal Safety Label? Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you for your help!

Moving sounds like good advice. 🙂 Apologizes for not having real advice. I just titled 2 bikes in Ga from Fla. My county title office doesn't like how Fla does things so I feel your pain.

Don't want to highjack the thread... but I'm in NE Georgia near Toccoa. If you are nearby and need Airhead fairing/body parts drop me a line. I have a garage full and wish to fill your garage.

I had something similar happen, CA DMV stinks. My advice is to get a photo of a label from a very similar bike. Change the numbers/information to match your bike and contact a vendor on eBay that makes duplicate stickers.

In my experience DMV looks for the sticker and confirms it has the correct information but they don’t know or care if it’s original. Good luck.

I sold my 1981 RS to a guy from FL. There were small issues with the GA title which FL would not accept. So he simply re-titled the bike in GA and it resides here at his "vacation home". (GA has more interesting roads than FL anyway.)

GA does not require a title after 20 years, only a valid tag and tag paperwork. GA institutes a lot of "proven law" from other states, so I suspect that there may be other states with similar rules. You might do some research, especially if you (or a close relative) own a vacation home.
