1988 GS Transmission overhaul
Hello Heads
I have a 88 r100GS with 45K miles on it. I just got done replacing the charging system and ignition with Enduralast components. I will be changing all the gaskets on both cans and also doing fork seals. The last few years I feel like my trans has been shifting a lot less like a Beemer should and more like a Ural (sorry I own both so I can make fun of both). I was wondering since I have most of the bike torn apart at the moment if I should send the trans in to be gone through? More importantly I have not had to send any of my beemer trans' in for work thus far. Do people here have good experiences with one outfit over another? Any input is much appreciated. Cheers TK
Others will reply, but 1988 was one of the years that needed the circlip added back to one of the shafts, I do believe. That could be your whole issue.

Thanks. Yes I've heard that before as well for this year. I feel confident to attack most jobs. I will admit that trans issues are a bit above my comfort level. I am leaning towards sending it out. looking for options in that as well. Cheers TK
If you send it out, then you need to make sure the repair facility has the ability and track record to cut the circlip groove and install the clip. It would be silly to do all the work to remove and ship a gearbox, and not have that last step done.

Hi
Thank you! that is excellent Info. The splines were lubed just under 20K ago. Sounds like it's about time again. The Beemer folk I hang out with have always referred to the cylinders as Jugs or Cans. They are all leaky. Will be replacing cylinder base, head and pushrod tube seals in a few weeks
