Thinking about powder coating the snowflake wheels on my 79 Rt. Has anyone ever done it? Does it hold up? Should I avoid it?

Thanks Ron

Thoughts....
• BMW had some factory wheels powder coated in gold on one of their "special edition" models.

• I owned a RS with coated paint and they worked very nicely. They were mis-matched colors and I ended up having them blasted and re-coated in a matching color. That final color was a silver-aluminum color, just slightly different from the unpainted casting, which was really quite striking.

Hi Ron,

Many people have done it.  The heats for powder coating aren't neat the heats to affect the aluminum metalurgy.

Enjoy and make it your own!

Cheers,

Ethan

One further note...

You will need to protect the wheel from the tire tools you decide to use to prevent paint chipping. This one reason to choose a silver or light gray color that's not so different from the cast metal color.

To the point you mentioned.  I saw a tip to cut up a thick plactic container, like a laundry detergent bottle.  Make into 3" (76mm) strips.  These strips can be used to cover the rim and used the lever on it without risking danger.  I just did this last week and it worked prefect, no marks!

This is what I do and it works great.
