I've been riding for the Summer on a restored '77 R75/7 and I have a good Nolan helmet which is a fine case for my noggin. It seems to move air OK although I can't really tell much of a difference when I adjust the three vents. It keeps the rain out and is comfortable after several hours of wear. It's loud but ear plugs take care of that. Overall I like it. Still, I'd like to know what features to look for in my next helmet. The chin bar comes off of mine so I can't safely lock it on the bike. It's either trust others and leave it on the tank, carry it around or put it in the panniers when there is room. Function and securing it are most important but I'd like to listen to some tunes on long rides. Recommendations and reasons why will be greatly appreciated.

I welcome any advise on other gear as well. Currently I have a light FieldSheer jacket with armor but no cold weather gear. I was looking at the BMW suits but hoo boy are they pricey!

My dual requirement for a helmet that fits my 64mm long-oval head (3XL) and comes in Hi-Viz yellow severely limits my choices, but this is what works for me....

β€’ My winter helmet is a Schuberth S3 in Hi-Viz yellow ($375), which is supposed to be the quietest helmet out there. I like the built-in sun visor and lower wind noise, but it's simply not that much quieter. This helmet truly fits my head. It's the most comfortable helmet I've had in 50 years of riding. It is also the first helmet that pieces started falling off. Schuberth USA has been responsive, but still. This is not a Snell rated helmet.

β€’ My hot weather/ short ride helmet is an LS2 modular ($169). This is a slightly rounder shape than the Schubert, so it's not quite as comfortable for super long rides, but the ease of access (I wear glasses) makes having it worthwhile. Wind noise is an issue, but it does have a built-in sun visor and comes in Hi-Viz. I found these when my brother bought the LS2 full-face ($99) and he's been very happy. These are not a Snell rated helmet.

Jackets
β€’ I recently bought one of the First Gear Kilamanjaro 37.5 jackets in Hi-Viz yellow and I'm very pleased. I rode the BRP for 8-hours during Hurricane Matthew without a single drop of water entering. This is a great autumn, winter, spring jacket with lots of features. You'll still need a mesh jacket above 75F, but you've probably got one of those anyway.

β€’ If not look for a yellow Joe Rocket mesh jacket on CraigsList for ~$20. Be sure and get the rain liner. These seem to be the standard of the industry and are rather ubiquitous. Dumb name, good quality jacket with Knox armor. I've had mine for 8 seasons now and it's just now starting to fray a little.

Owning an old Airhead is easy.
Keeping an old Airhead running great is the true test.

this statement simply isn't true...........

You'll still need a mesh jacket above 75F,

what you need to LOOK into is LDCOMFORT
http://ldcomfort.com

I wear that same jacket ( First Gear Kilamanjaro 37.5 jackets in Hi-Viz yellow ) year round because I ride almost every ride wearing LD Comfort L/S top

Watch the video and understand that in 110ΒΊ weather while wearing LD Comfort top I am 10-15ΒΊ COOLER because of the technology that my friend and fellow LD, Iron Butt & MERA rider, Mario has designed into this garment. you simply 'preload' the undergarment with water
and
I can feel the heat escaping thru my fully ZIPPED jacket around my neck. the hot air escapes and the COOL air enters thru my wrists and COOLS my entire body. :cheer: πŸ˜‰

And i am 100% protected because my jacket is all zipped up, and not flapping in the breeze........
