Aftermath of the whack
Back on December 9, 2017 I had to avoid a car that was not 'yielding right of way'. He had a stop sign I didn't. I had to try an emergency stop that did not go well. I was on Shinko tires, wet pavement and 31 degree temperature. Low speed. At most 20 mph, probably a little less.
His insurance company has totaled my R80RT. They are offering me $3900 for my '83. I'm thinking of saying goodbye to the offer and just keeping what I have.
I already patched up the right mirror. I put Sugru on the ball end of the front brake lever. I will grind/polish the right cylinder head cover and re spray in high temp gloss black. The upper right corner of the fairing needs a touch up. It's about 1 1/2 inches by 1/2 inch. That was all that happened to the Beemer! It came through like a tiger tank and it didn't land on me.
I just changed the tires to the Activs. After buying it, I replaced all fluids save the front forks. Replaced the carb rubber tubes. Installed fresh plugs. Replaced the air filter. And, installed an Eastern Beaver 8 circuit fuse box. It runs two circuits for Gerbings heated gear. I also ran a Battery Tender 12v utility socket into the cockpit. Plus, I wired in the Garmin GPS holder. Then there are the Ram Mount gizmos.....
Anyway. The R80RT does so well at executing its designed purpose. And my additions enhance its ability to go far and go nicely. So far, the design is to keep it.
Cheers,
Bill
Guaire -
Sorry to hear of your "whack". Glad you are OK and still with us.

Great advice for all of us. Thanks.
Owning an old Airhead is easy.
Keeping an old Airhead running great is the true test.
I'm glad I'm still around too!
The insurance company I'm dealing with says the whole right fairing needs to be replaced, along with the right cylinder. Totally deranged people.
Glad you're OK. Sounds like getting them to pay you some cash and doing your own work is the way to go.
Thank you, too, thunder motive.
I was only told of the plan to salvage my R80RT for $3900. No one said anything about a damage only settlement. I've done so much with it past that price. I didn't want to lose it for the buy out.
Finally, today I heard back from one of the three people I've been dealing with. I said it's not right to declare it salvage when you're saying the fairing needs replacing along with the right cylinder?! No way. I told her I'm not trying to soak you because you're an insurance company. She said she would run the claim as a payout without salvage. Waited for it...... They would give me $3517.92.
Ding.
OK.
I can put an MOA sticker on the fairing spot. Just spray the head cover. I already put Sugru over the tip of the brake lever and repaired the right mirror. Nothing is wrong. I told the insurance lady, 'this is not a Ducati' that breaks apart'. This was made by the company that made tiger tanks. This settlement is way beyond generous. "I'll take it".
Then we arranged electronic transfer to my account.
Here's a few pix.
Good to see a favorable outcome for a change. I don't know the forum rules about naming companies but I would like to know the name of that insurance company.
My insurance agent is an independent so he usually just shops on price. I have not had a claim in the 19 years doing business with him. I really have no idea how a company would respond if I had a claim.
Bret - It's USAA.
Bill
Thanks Bill.
You got USAA to insure you? They sent me to Progressive, so I found another carrier.
My insurance is not USAA. That's the policy of the guy who nearly killed me.
Oh, of course -- I read the thread too quickly. That was an excellent settlement!
