I am curious if anyone knows when in 1974 that BMW went from /5 handlebar switchgear to the newer switchgear.

I have a R60 that was built in May '74 and it came from the factory with /5 switchgear. This bike was one of ten R60s that were purchased from a Middle Tennessee BMW dealer by the local Masonic Lodge (I have owned two of them and I am familiar with four of the ten) and they all came with the /5 handlebar switches. I think i recall reading somewhere in the far distant past (old mind, poor memory) that it may have been mid year, but I can't find anything on it now.

OK, I thought I had heard (or read) that when they changed to the /6 that BMW moved to the Hella switchgear. I just read in one of my books that the 1974 model retained the /5 switches and it wasn't until 1975 that they migrated to Hella.

1974 model-year /6s had switchgear which, externally, looked like the same as /5's. However, their wiring is different, as are the wire connectors (I think there were no connectors at all on /5s, just screw terminals in the headlight shell). IOW, /5 and /6 switchgear is not interchangeable.
